Licensing
Meerkat 4 is source-available commercial software. Source inspection, modification, and development use are permitted. Production use requires a paid license, including sites that use Statamic Core for free.
Meerkat is not open-source software. The Meerkat Commercial License contains the controlling legal terms.
#When a license is required
| Use | Paid license required? |
|---|---|
| Local development | No |
| Automated tests and CI | No |
| Evaluation or demonstration | No |
| Staging for a licensed production site | No additional license |
| Public production site | Yes |
| Private site used in ongoing business operations | Yes |
| Production site that uses free Statamic Core | Yes |
| Another production site covered by the same Statamic license | No additional license |
| Another production site that requires a separate Statamic license | Yes, a separate license |
Local, testing, and staging installations do not require additional licenses for a covered production site.
#What counts as one site
One Meerkat license follows the site scope of one Statamic license and includes:
- all Statamic multisite sites and domains that the installation manages
- load-balanced application nodes and other replicas of the same installation
- local, test, CI, preview, and staging copies that support that installation
- disaster-recovery copies that are not independently serving another production site.
A separate Statamic license or independent Core production installation requires a separate Meerkat license.
A standard site license does not cover a software-as-a-service offering, hosted comments platform, website builder, or multi-tenant service operating sites for unrelated customers. Contact Stillat to arrange appropriate rights for those uses. An agency hosting one Licensed Site for one client is not treated as a multi-tenant service merely because the agency manages the hosting.
#Client projects
An agency or developer may install, configure, and modify Meerkat while building a client project without purchasing a license for development. The production installation must have a valid license before launch.
The license permits you to deliver Meerkat with a completed Statamic project. Transfer the license through an authorized license channel or with written approval from Stillat. The transfer becomes effective after acceptance or registration. After the transfer, the license permits you to keep development or archive copies. It does not permit use of that production license for a different client or site.
Contractors working on a Licensed Site do not need separate licenses for that work.
#Modifications and addons
The license permits changes to Meerkat for your Licensed Site or a client Licensed Site. It also permits distribution of independently written themes, templates, integrations, and addons that operate with Meerkat. These products must not contain Meerkat or large parts of its source code.
You may not redistribute Meerkat or a modified version as a standalone download, addon bundle, starter kit, site builder, hosted comments product, or competing product. Contact Stillat if you need OEM, redistribution, or broader deployment rights.
#Public source and forks
You may view and fork Meerkat through its authorized public source-code host for evaluation, development, and preparing contributions. A public fork does not grant production rights or permission to republish Meerkat through another package, download, or distribution channel.
#Site operator responsibilities
The operator of a Meerkat site remains responsible for its content, moderation, privacy notices, user consent, data retention, security, and compliance with applicable laws. Installing Meerkat does not by itself make a site compliant with privacy, accessibility, consumer-protection, or records-retention requirements.
#Versions and updates
Unless the purchase terms say otherwise, a valid license provides a perpetual right to run the version acquired for its Licensed Site. Access to future major versions, updates, or support may have separate eligibility terms.
#Statamic licensing
A Meerkat license does not include Statamic. Your site must separately satisfy Statamic's licensing requirements.
#Additional rights
For redistribution, OEM use, broad deployments, or use that the standard license does not cover, contact Stillat.
